Parks and Outdoor Fun
The McDowell Nature Preserve is situated on more than 1,000 acres alongside Lake Wylie. There are nine hiking trails of various terrain and difficulty throughout the preserve that total nearly seven miles, and its abundance of wildlife makes it an ideal place for observation. There are more than 100 different species of birds on the preserve, amongst a variety of other flora and fauna. The Mecklenburg County parks and recreation department runs environmental education and nature programs at its network of parks, including the McDowell Nature Preserve that people of all ages are encouraged to enjoy. The preserve has playgrounds, reservable picnic facilities and a campground. Visitors also have access to Copperhead Island where they can enjoy fishing, boating and other aquatic activities.
The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden provides an unparalleled horticultural experience for kids if you don’t mind piling into the car for a 30 minute ride to nearby Belmont, NC. The botanical garden is located along the banks of Lake Wylie and can be enjoyed during any time of year, which is why it’s known as the “Carolinas’ garden for all seasons.” Visitors can navigate the gardens themselves or take a guided tour. There is also a conservatory dedicated to tropical plants and orchids. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden has a summer Garden Adventure Camp program for kids of all ages, as well as a few continuing education classes for grown ups.
Outdoor activities for kids might be more ideal for you, but sometimes weather gets in the way and ruins your fun. Fortunately, there are still plenty of ways to entertain your child indoors. Discovery Place, in downtown Charlotte, NC, gives visitors of all ages the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in a fuss-free, fun, interactive environment. The museum has two rotating featured exhibitions and several permanent exhibits that are perfect for kids of all ages.
Discovery Place also has two children’s museums (Discovery Place KIDS) in Huntersville, NC, and Rockingham, NC. More kid-centric than their counterpart, the children’s museums offer rich learning experiences that engage children’s imagination and creativity. Discovery Place patrons also have access to the Charlotte Nature Museum, a 15 minute car ride away. Visitors of the Charlotte Nature Museum can walk amongst free-flying butterflies, observe live animals and participate in hands-on learning activities.
